Functional Behavior Assessment

A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) occurs when a student is exhibiting a problem behavior in the classroom. This assessment is a way to track and document the behavior so that, if necessary, a behavior plan can be created for success. When completing a FBA, teachers must take detailed notes on a student's behavior. This may include time, type, antecedent, consequent, or any other information that will help to create a complete picture of a student. Keeping track of data will allow teachers to keep a running record of behavior problems in the classroom, and will provide evidence if a targeted behavior plan is necessary.

a sample Behavior Intervention Plan |
Students who are struggling in the classroom may benefit from a formal behavior plan, also known as a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). This plan is a formal write-up of the student's current level of behavioral performance, as well as the goal performance. Data from the FBA is necessary in order to create a BIP. This data provides the current level of performance, and the goal level should be determined by using a replacement behavior that is similar in act but not in severity. For example, instead of biting a classmate, a student's goal would be to recognize anger and choose a piece of gum to bite on. This plan will provide a target goal and plans to take action should a student struggle.
